    Is AI Consulting Worth It?

    Published . Updated .

AI means artificial intelligence. AI consulting can help when a company needs outside expertise for a clear business goal. Its value depends on the scope, deliverables, cost, and expected result. A production system is one useful result. A sound risk assessment or investment decision can also justify an advisory engagement.

Define what you need before you compare proposals. Advice, software delivery, and continuing operation are different services. Ask each provider which service its proposal covers.

How can you assess an AI consulting proposal?

Start with a goal that you can measure. Identify the obstacle and compare consulting with existing software and internal delivery. Then agree the deliverables and review dates.

Three checks: define the goal, compare options, and agree deliverables. Then compare expected value with cost. Use these checks to assess value. They do not guarantee a successful engagement.

Question A useful answer What needs more work
What problem will this solve? A named process and a measure, such as error rate or cycle time A broad request without an agreed outcome
Why use outside help? A specific gap in expertise, capacity, data, integration, or controls No comparison with existing tools or internal options
What will exist at the end? Agreed advice, software, or operating services with acceptance criteria Unclear deliverables or responsibilities
When will we review progress? Milestones that reflect the scope and access requirements Dates without dependencies or review criteria
What happens after the engagement? Documented ownership, access, support, and continuity terms Knowledge or access that depends on one person

What does an engagement pay for?

Consulting can cover use-case selection, data preparation, software integration, risk controls, and user adoption. A use case describes a specific task for the system. The right mix depends on the goal. Model access alone does not provide these services.

In July 2024, Gartner forecast abandonment of at least 30% of generative AI projects after proof of concept by end-2025. A proof of concept tests whether an idea can work. Gartner named poor data quality, weak risk controls, rising costs, and unclear business value. This was a forecast, not a measured failure rate. Gartner forecast

    Work Possible deliverable Review question
Use-case selection A prioritised problem and business case Does the expected value justify the next step?
Data preparation Checked sources and agreed definitions Can the system use reliable, permitted data?
Build and integration Software connected to approved systems Does it meet the agreed tests?
Risk controls Permissions, approval rules, and activity records Can the company inspect and control actions?
Adoption Training and changes to the work process Can users complete the task with less effort?

How Chiri approaches this. Chiri is an AI managed service provider. This means Chiri builds, operates, and improves company-specific software. Small teams of senior operators and engineers work with the customer's team. Chiri targets first production systems within weeks. Timing depends on scope, access, data, and required controls.

How should a company compare cost and value?

Ask for a scope-specific proposal. Compare the full cost with the expected benefit and the uncertainty around that benefit. Include integration, testing, support, maintenance, and internal staff time. Do not compare a small project with unrelated enterprise deployment budgets.

Agree a review point before further spending. A useful assessment can recommend no build when the expected value does not justify the cost.

    What are the warning signs?

    • The provider cannot explain the goal or acceptance criteria.
    • The proposal selects a model before checking the task and data.
    • The proposal omits necessary permissions, reviews, or activity records.
    • The provider makes delivery promises without checking access and scope.
    • The contract leaves ownership, support, or continuity unclear.

A document is not a warning sign by itself. It can be the correct deliverable for strategy, risk, or investment decisions. It becomes a problem when the buyer expects working software instead.

    Questions and answers

Is AI consulting worth it for a small company?

It can be, when the goal and expected value justify outside help. Compare the proposal with existing software and internal options. Include all delivery and operating costs.

Can a company use ChatGPT instead?

Sometimes. A general assistant can help with individual tasks. Company-wide work can require approved data access, integrations, testing, and risk controls. Check existing tools before commissioning custom work.

How fast should consulting show results?

Agree milestones for the specific scope. Data access, security reviews, and integration complexity affect timing. A narrow project can move quickly when those requirements are ready.

Is advice less valuable than software?

Not always. Advice can support a valuable investment or risk decision. The deliverable must match the buyer's goal and the agreed acceptance criteria.
